Safe sleep

Every sleep should be a safe sleep for your baby

Safe sleep practices are important to protect a baby’s life – it’s as simple as that. That is why Hawke’s Bay Maternity services are passionate about informing you of the safest ways for your baby to sleep.
Below are the six principles for protecting a baby’s life and a visual of the safe sleep cot card you will receive.

When you are getting ready to have your pēpi/baby your LMC/midwife will ensure you know about the six safe sleep principles that keep your baby safe. When your baby arrives you and your family/whānau will be shown how to and supported to sleep your baby in the safest possible way.

Educating, promoting and demonstrating safe sleep practice is a significant part of a midwives’ role and you will experience this throughout your time with us, preparing you for when your baby/pēpi is home and keeping them safe.
Safe sleep for babies is so important to us that we provide a portable safe sleep space (a pepi-pod) for our most vulnerable babies.
